15-year-old Tracey Berkowitz is naked under a tattered shower curtain at the back of a bus, looking for her little brother Sonny, who thinks he’s a dog

Tracey’s journey leads us into the dark underbelly of the city, into the emotional cesspool of her home, through the brutality of her high school, the clinical cat and mouse games with her shrink and her soaring fantasies of Billy Zero - her boyfriend and Rock ‘n’ Roll saviour. Her travels also put her in contact with the seedier inhabitants of the city. Like Lance, her would-be saviour who ultimately puts her life in jeopardy

Tracey’s stories begin to intertwine truth with lies, and hope with despair as we move closer to the truth of Sonny’s disappearance

The Tracey Fragments stars Ellen Page in the title role and will have a limited theatrical release in the United States May 9th, 2008.

Michael W. Dean and Joseph Matheny chat on the phone and there’s no way these two talkers could interview one or the other. So they rap together, in a concentric hypertextual parenthetical way, TCP over IP, about how to make money by giving away art, where the Internet is headed, changing views on changing protection of intellectual “property”, Joseph Campbell, suing Disney for intellectual property violation, how to self-publish your brilliant books, Tom Jennings, why control of your art is more important than lots of money, how to assemble your own vigilant army of the damned, The Pirate Bay, cease-and-desist letters, the Church of the Subgenius, BoingBoing, the WELL, Creative Commons, sex, cats, art and an incredible amount of more nifty stuff.
Part two will cover the coming collapse of the infrastructure of the world, why Catholics are killing the world with overpopulation, and why both of these guys just wanna do the judo master thing and step out of the world’s way, while still running it all from their rural bunkers.

It was created by independent director Andrew J. Holden

The film uses the structure of literary theorist Northrop Frye to describe the common, repeating stories in Western culture, and how Cyberpunk can be defined and understood according to that analysis.

It is also a political documentary with a focus toward American film industry portrayal of race, gender, and government.

Creation

Director Andrew J. Holden created most of the film on a desktop built from dumpster-dove computer parts. The 40

Mhz system was held together by duct tape. In addition, the footage is entirely composed of material from the Internet - all the video footage, software programs, and even the narrative voice itself were ripped from the net.Clips from many popular Hollywood movies such as Blade Runner, Mad Max, Labyrinth were used without permission from the corporations that control those media.

As such, the film is surrounded by the politically controversial issue of online File-sharing and is largely ignored by mainstream media. However, independent publications such as Toronto’s Exclaim! newspaper have given it positive reviews.[1]

Distribution“The Cyberpunk Educator” has English narration and has been subtitled in seven languages. Outside of Canada and the US, it is most popular in Turkey, Argentina, and Russia.

The film has been used as a teaching tool at universities in Argentina, Canada, and the US due to its explicit use of Northrop Frye’s theories on literary structure.

The film has a sequel titled “Amerika” - the Cyberpunkfilm webpage indicates it will be released sometime in 2007.

SiCKO is the latest docutainment film by the Academy Award-winning film maker Michael Moore, and its focus isn’t so much on the plight of those without health care as it is on the experiences of those with health care who find their insurance companies are more concerned with cutting cost than with saving people’s lives.

In the films Roger & Me, Bowling for Columbine, Fahrenheit 9/11, and in the television shows like The Awful Truth and TV Nation Michael Moore perfected a kind of ambush journalism that, while entertaining, provided his opponents with ample fodder for calling his conclusions into question. His use of montage to illustrate the conversations in which he engages are still as punchy and entertaining as in his previous works, but the ambushing of public figures is missing from SiCKO. Read the rest of the review on Alterati

You are on the Global Frequency. At least, you would be had the WB stood firm with its initial decision to air thirteen episodes of the sci-fi drama based on the Warren Ellis comic book. Unfortunately, a management change at the channel led to the scrapping of the show. Only the pilot made it to post-production.

(After viewing the pilot, executives at the WB television channel decided not to put the series into production and it was shelved. The pilot only saw the light of day when it was “leaked” onto the Internet and distributed using the Bittorrent protocol (incidentally the first time an unaired pilot television program was released to the public in this way). Despite campaigning from fans, the WB stuck by the decision to pass on the series.)

Never aired, the pilot screener’s been making the rounds and finally wound up in my hands. As a fan of Ellis’ 12-issue maxiseries, I was eager to see just how bad they screwed up the comic. But Global Frequency’s not a bad show at all, in fact it trumps much of the WB’s lineup and fills a much needed sci-fi gap for the network. It’s too bad it was never given a chance.

Problems that threaten the world can often be too big for any single country or intelligence agency. And since those in charge of our protection often have difficulty working together, the world could face annihilation at any moment. Enter the Global Frequency, a worldwide community of specialists (1001 to be exact) who tackle the problems too big for a single government. I’m not talking pollution or famine, the Global Frequency take on more immediate and often X-Files-worthy threats.

As in the comics, Global Frequency is run by no-nonsense Miranda Zero (Michelle Forbes). At her side and at the helm of a massive communications network is the voice of Global Frequency, Aleph (Aimee Garcia). Forbes is Miranda Zero, there could be no better actor for the role. She is perfect in this part. Garcia lacks some of the bite of Aleph’s comic-book counterpart, but gets the job done.

The pilot has ex-cop Sean Flynn (Josh Hopkins) discovering a dead man in an alley. Not so unusual in San Francisco, except this guy’s missing half his body, split from head-to-toe. When the dead man’s high-tech cell phone rings, Flynn answers and hears the fateful phrase, “You are on the Global Frequency.”

From there, Flynn proves himself a brilliant detective and along with Global Frequency agent 555 AKA Dr. Katrina Finch (Jenni Baird) hunt down the killer. While Flynn has trouble believing in the supernatural, he soon discovers that the world is plagued by the unexplained. To make things worse, the unexplained usually leads to massive destruction and death. That’s why the Global Frequency exists. More

Have you ever wondered what makes guerrilla filmmakers tick? What is the invisible force that drives each and every one of them to sacrifice a normal life and pursue a position in one of the most competitive arts in the world?
Welcome to the strange universe of Horror Business, a documentary that has been a twenty-four hour a day, seven-day-a-week obsession of mine since I began shooting it in January of 2003. I traveled all over the United States and have shot over 60 hours of footage of the most interesting independent filmmakers alive. You may recognize many of the artists that appear in Horror Business but I assure you that some of them will be heard and seen here for the first time.

What these filmmakers show us is that the dream is alive as long as you continue to press forward. Never give up, no matter what.

Ergo Proxy (エルゴプラクシー, Erugo Purakushī) is a science fiction suspense anime television series, produced by Manglobe, which premiered across Japan from 25 February 2006 on the WOWOW satellite network. It is directed by Shukou Murase, with screenplay by Dai Sato et al. The story initially takes place in a futuristic dome city called Romdo, built to protect its citizens after a global ecological disaster. In this utopia, humans and androids (AutoReivs) coexist with each other peacefully under a total management system. A series of murders committed by berserk robots infected with the Cogito virus are starting to jeopardize the delicate balance of the social order. Behind the scenes, the government is conducting secret experiments on a mysterious humanoid lifeform called Proxy, which is believed to hold the key to the survival of mankind.

Book Description

The most feared, fascinating, and dangerous book
in the history of humankind . . .
Necronomicon

An ancient Arabic text — a powerful book of spells that could, in the wrong hands, create unimaginable and irreversible devastation — the Necronomicon featured prominently in the stories of legendary horror writer H.P. Lovecraft. For many generations, few believed it to be anything other than pure fiction.

But in 1972, a young man who, for his own protection, must be known simply as “Simon,” stumbled upon an old, handwritten manuscript that ultimately proved to be an authentic edition of the unholy work.

Dead Names is the startling true account of the dark and violent history of this most fearsome of books: from its Middle Eastern origins to its reemergence centuries later; its role in pivotal events of the twentieth century, from the JFK assassination to the Son of Sam murders; and the terrible fates that befell those who helped bring the Necronomicon out of the shadows and into the light of day.

As already discussed on our podcast: Part 1 and Part 2 of PlusUltra! Tracy’s discussion with Peter Levenda.

This is a BBC original production which aired in 1991, directed by James Runcie. It chronicles J.G. Ballard’s first trip to Shanghai after he first left it in 1946. He discusses his ilfe and his work especially his two autobiographical novels, _Empire of the Sun_ and _The Kindness of Women_. There are also bits there about _Crash_ and _Vermilion Sands_. A must for any J.G. Ballard fan.

Quality is far from perfect as this is a VHS rip

Wanderlust, an IFC/Netflix documentary chronicling the “road picture” genre in movies, works in fits and starts, particularly when it sticks to letting actual clips from celebrated road films speak for themselves. But gradually, the documentary becomes less and less interesting as the generalities and cliches pile up, bogging down in its own one-sided aesthetic and political viewpoints.

Wanderlust works best when it lets the films discussed, speak for themselves. Generous clips from movies as diverse as The Grapes of Wrath, Detour and Vanishing Point more than get across their own points about America’s restless love affair with the road, with freedom, and with speed. Unfortunately, the directors of Wanderlust, Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman, don’t trust enough in the power that these images have to hold an audience, so they graft on an utterly superfluous fictional framing device of having “The Editor” (Paul Rudd) and “The Director” (Tom McCarthy) go out on the road to finish their/this documentary. Poorly written and indifferently (at best) acted, these scenes pop up throughout the documentary proper, aping scenes from other road pictures, while totally destroying the rhythm and context that the directors keep trying to build.

Quite a few familiar faces show up in Wanderlust to talk about the road picture, including Dennis Hopper, Wim Wenders, Gus Van Sant, Sam Shepard, Barry Levinson, Robert Benton, Karen Black, Monte Hellman, Arthur Hiller, Hal Needham, Lazlo Kovacs, Richard C. Sarafian, and many others. And while their comments are for the most part considered and helpful in widening the audience’s appreciation of the genre (photographer Jeff Brouws comes off as the most thoughtful and fair in his assessment of the genre), generalities do tend to crop up (mostly at the hands of the two film historians that appear on camera). If you have any background in film or movie history, or for that matter, just a lot of experience watching films, you probably won’t hear anything here that you didn’t know already.

As well, Wanderlust’s take on the various road pictures, both from an artistic and political standpoint, tends to be fixed along all-too-familiar lines. While no one is discounting the fact that a great many road pictures reflect or embody existential, introspective, nihilistic or ironic elements of society, that doesn’t mean other examples of the road film that don’t, are somehow less valid as artistic works. The film makes a point of singling out Hollywood “entertainment” road pictures, like Midnight Run, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, and Smokey and the Bandit as examples of frivolous trifles that emphasis only pyrotechnics, spectacle and slapstick humor. It’s an age-old, elitist snobbery that goes back to Chaplin versus Laurel and Hardy: that somehow, depressing drama is intrinsically more “valuable” artistically, than comedy.

As well, the modern obsession in film studies with angst, and the subsequent imperious dismissal of comedy or anything that may be considered “light” or ultimately hopeful or positive, comes from a certain quarter of the film industry and film historians, and frankly, it’s a boring cliche. I, for one, would take Midnight Run any day over some of the pretentious claptrap that’s championed in Wanderlust. I’m not sure if Hal Needham realized it at the time, but his inclusion in this film, and the choices that were made as to which of his sound bites to use, would indicate to me that he was included as proof that Smokey and the Bandit was a soulless, money-making machine, and not a ragged, rough, woolly cartoon brought to road picture life (with one of the all-time great comedic performances by Jackie Gleason). Other road pictures that involve comedy or romance that ends hopefully (as opposed to something like Gun Crazy or Bonnie and Clyde), aren’t even included, such as the beautiful, mesmerizing Two for the Road, or the biggest road picture of all: It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World — a comedy. Politics play a part in these distinctions, as well; the film makes a point of criticizing the “inherent immorality of Reaganomics,” in relation to the yuppie-based road pictures (such as Something Wild), but nowhere did I hear the names “John Kennedy” or “Lyndon Johnson” in connection with Vietnam, and its impact on the turbulence of the 1960s, and by extension, the road picture genre (indeed, Wanderlust only shows Nixon and Reagan’s faces in its newsreel clips – never LBJ or Carter or Clinton). A discussion of politics is necessary when trying to understand this genre, but staying to one side of the political fence only marginalizes the film’s conclusions.

Eleven films created between 1983 and 2000, Vox 13 offers a grand circumnavigation of the subject of language. These films consider what it means to read, what it means to listen, when it is that we speak, how words acquire meaning, what it means to write, who we listen to, how we listen, what speaks, other ways we can speak, what the voice is, where language can be found, what words do to time, what holds stories together, and how light shapes language.

UbuWeb is pleased to present the latest installment of our ongoing series of full-length e-books. Titles for this series include works by Steve Benson, Maurice Blanchot, Mairéad Byrne, Terence Gower & Mónica de la Torre, Dick Higgins, Bernard Nöel, Severo Sarduy, Claude Simon, Rosemarie Waldrop, Robert Wilson, and Monique Wittig. This new series of /ubu editions presents eleven out-of-print works from 1957 to 1994 - and also includes three newer titles (1999-2007). Of the historical republications, there are three works of poetry, three works of prose, one opera libretto, one work of critical theory, and one manifesto - though each piece blurs these genres. Seven were written in English, four appear in translation, and one is bilingual. Two authors could be considered language poets, two are associated with Tel Quel, one arguably initiated Fluxus, another arguably initiated the new novel. Four are women, nine are men. One title was changed for its /ubu publication.

Celebrated filmmaker Barbara Kopple teamed with Marijana Wotton to direct and produce this documentary about five female war correspondents in Iraq where, in the past four years, 152 journalists have been killed. Her subjects are seasoned, multi-award winning photographers, videographers, and writers (Molly Bingham, Marie Colvin, Janine Di Giovanni, Mary Rogers, and May Ying Welsh) whose previous assignments have taken them to war zones in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. Following them from the early days of the U.S. invasion through the increasingly chaotic and violent occupation and insurgency of 2003-4, we get to see how they go about getting their stories and witness a behind the scenes view of Iraq that’s more raw than anything on TV. Often physically and emotionally drained, pursued by nightmares and anxieties, these five extraordinarily courageous and committed women generously allow the filmmakers into their work and private lives. (Amy Taubin)Directors: Barbara Kopple, Marijana Wotton, Bob Eisenhardt
Producers: Marijana Wotton, Barbara Kopple

We were keeping our eye on 1984. When the year came and the prophecy didn’t, thoughtful Americans sang softly in praise of themselves. The roots of liberal democracy had held. Wherever else the terror had happened, we, at least, had not been visited by Orwellian nightmares.

But we had forgotten that alongside Orwell’s dark vision, there was another - slightly older, slightly less well known, equally chilling: Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World. Contrary to common belief even among the educated, Huxley and Orwell did not prophesy the same thing. Orwell warns that we will be overcome by an externally imposed oppression. But in Huxley’s vision, no Big Brother is required to deprive people of their autonomy, maturity and history. As he saw it, people will come to love their oppression, to adore the technologies that undo their capacities to think.

What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one. Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance. Orwell feared we would become a captive culture. Huxley feared we would become a trivial culture, preoccupied with some equivalent of the feelies, the orgy porgy, and the centrifugal bumblepuppy. As Huxley remarked in Brave New World Revisited, the civil libertarians and rationalists who are ever on the alert to oppose tyranny “failed to take into account man’s almost infinite appetite for distractions”. In 1984, Huxley added, people are controlled by inflicting pain. In Brave New World, they are controlled by inflicting pleasure. In short, Orwell feared that what we hate will ruin us. Huxley feared that what we love will ruin us.

This book is about the possibility that Huxley, not Orwell, was right.

Postcards From The Future: The Chuck Palahniuk Documentary takes a look at author Chuck Palahniuk’s landmark year of 2003. With back to back books and subsequent tours hitting the public, Chuck’s year was filled with success, controversy, and even phenomena. But what many fans don’t know is that this entire year kicked off with a mysterious conference held on his work in a small town in Pennsylvania. As guests of the conference, my fellow documentarians and I attended the three day event and captured some of the most exclusive material a fan could hope for. Chuck read from his novels, hosted multiple Q&As, gave an hour long exclusive presentation, participated in a screening of Fight Club, signed books and, best of all, sat down for a very candid one hour interview. But it wasn’t until the days of editing this piece together that followed that we realized the true gift of the conference – for Chuck had attended with a very important motive and message for his fans: To evolve a generation of young readers… into writers.

Its taboo, obscene and controversial, yet somehow seems to permeate every single aspect of our culture-from Hollywood, to the schoolyard to the Senate floor in Washington D.C. It’s the word at the very center of the debate on Free Speech - and everyone seems to have an opinion. FUCK will exam how the word is impacting our world today thru interviews, film and television clips, music, and original animation by Oscar nominee Bill Plympton. Scholars and linguists will examine the long history of fuck. Comedians, actors, and writers who have charted and popularized the upward course of fuck will be heard from, often while defending the Constitutional Right of Free Speech, all the way to the Supreme Court. FUCK will visit with those who actually fuck for a living. We’ll hear from advocates who oppose fuck and it’s infringement into our everyday lives. We’ll watch some of the most famous and infamous film and television clips that feature fuck, we’ll hear some of the most famous fucks ever uttered and we’ll feel the impact of fuck on our everyday lives.

There’s a confrontation in the fascinating new documentary “The U.S. vs. John Lennon” that sums up why the most sardonic, most earnest and most intelligent of the Beatles can still drive people nuts, 26 years after his death. It’s the early ’70s, probably 1972, a year that marked a turning point in Lennon’s life and, if you ask me, in American history. Sitting alongside his wife, Yoko Ono, Lennon is locked in heated conversation with Gloria Emerson, then a famous (some would say infamous) foreign correspondent for the New York Times.

The scene is brief but electric. (The same clip reportedly appears in the 1988 film “Imagine: John Lennon,” which I haven’t seen since its release.) There’s none of the star-fucking or ego-fellation that today characterizes celebrity interviews. Emerson and Lennon are both angry, and getting angrier. She finds the Lennon-Ono publicity stunts and peacenik ballads naive and simplistic, and she’s letting him know that. Eyes boring into her, Lennon says he doesn’t care about that, that his only goal is to end the Vietnam War and save lives. “You can’t possibly believe that you’ve saved a single life!” Emerson says in her exaggerated upper-crust drawl. “Dear boy, you’re living in a dream world.” Lennon flicks her away like an insect, pointing out that “Give Peace a Chance” had become both a pop hit and the unofficial anthem of the antiwar movement. More >>

Werner Herzog’s Stroszek is about Bruno Stroszek and his adventure to America to escape the emptiness of Germany and it’s fitting for today in that the ending features a Thanksgiving of sorts, although a myth breaking version of it.

Bruno, a prostitute named Eva, and Scheitz, Bruno’s older friend, go on a journey to America to make it and escape oppressive and depressive Germany. Bruno and Scheitz are alike in their impracticality and dreamy disposition. Eva is a little too practical, even desperate and her new life in America looks more like a scenery change only. The difference between American and Germany to Bruno seems to be the way in which the society breaks you down. Germany does it physically but America does something even more insidious, they break your spirit while smiling with overly white teeth and being seemingly friendly.

Interesting things abound in this magical, bleak film: dancing chickens, mobile homes, colorful idiot hicks, banker schmucks, country and western songs - a panoply of American mythology looked at depressingly but lucidly. America is shiny and glamorous but that’s just the surface, the persona or mask. What’s behind the mask isn’t that pretty and the uglier and more fragmented the truth becomes the thicker the veneer that is needed to fool others and oneself. This film is about that duality but it’s also an adventure that’s enjoyable. - Betaparticle

David Lynch’s The Amputee 1974

Written and Directed by David Lynch
Cinematography by Herb Cardwell
Starring Catherine Coulson (Woman), David Lynch (Doctor)
Running Time 5 minutes

When Lynch attended the AFI he made a short film entitled The Amputee. It is also listed in his Coffee Table Book His friend Fred Elmes – with whom he was working on Eraserhead – had to test the quality of some new film material. Lynch persuaded Elmes to let him direct a short film: The Amputee. It showed a woman (Catherine Coulson) without legs on a chair writing a letter and a male nurse (David Lynch) bandaging her stumps.

When the AFI executives saw the short film instead of test pictures, according to an anecdote, one of them said that only “that Lynch” can be responsible for that.

The Amputee was also the name of a project Catherine Coulson (the Log Lady from Twin Peaks) said she and Lynch were working on in May ‘93:

One upcoming project once again pairs Coulson with Lynch, this time with both of them in front of the camera. “David and I are acting in a project called ‘The Amputee.’ I can’t say anymore, because I want it to be a surprise.”

(excerpt from: LOGGING IN: Log Lady Catherine E. Coulson talks about David Lynch’s ‘Twin Peaks’ and San Jose Rep’s ‘Rumor’ San Jose Metro, May 20-26, 1993)

Sound Editing and Mixing: Alan Splet
Sound Effects: David Lynch, Margaret Lynch, Robert Chadwick, Alan Splet
Still Photography: Doug Randall

Cast: Richard White (Boy), Dorothy Mc Giniss (Grandmother), Virginia Maitland (Mother), Robert Chadwick (Father)

Running Time 34 minutes
16 mm, Color

[the script was] “very weird…it was just little images and stuff, sort of like shorthand and poetry.”

“I painted the entire third floor of my house black to make a 34-minute abstract film called “The Grandmother,” about a disturbed boy who plants a seed which grows into a loving grandma.”

“There’s a guy a projectionist, who will not see this film [Eraserhead], and he couldn’t stand to see the film I made before this, The Grandmother. It would do something to him inside that he could not stand. It wasn’t the film at all, it just triggered something. Everybody has a subconscious and they put a lid on it. There’s things in there. And then along comes something, and something bobs up. I don’t know if that’s good.”

Jack Nance

“I think Lynch kept it in a shoebox or something. he wouldn’t let anybody see it.”

“The next afternoon we went into the screening room and watched The Grandmother. I’ve always described to people that, for me, it was like sitting for about fortyfive minutes in the electric chair! It was a shock…

WTF have we been doing? Well, as you may or may not know, Greylodge has experience explosive growth over the last 2 years. We’ve had to upgrade servers several times to accommodate the ever increasing traffic (Feb. 07, we did 9.5 million visits), thanks to a myriad of mainstream media write- ups and insane link proliferation in the blogosphere we’ve had to build up to a Dual Intel 3.4 Xeon GHz CPU with its own dedicated 100 megabit connection.Woo. So, now that we’re settled and massive traffic seems to be manageable, Dr. Grey has taken it upon himself to redesign GreyLodge Occult Review, which is, after all along with sTarE, the roots of this crazy experiment. New look, new feel, new content, same feisty I-don’t-give-a-damn-teetering- on-the-edge-of-ruin attitude. *heh*

Myself, Herr Doktor, and several of our close co-conspirators have dug into our private reserves once again to present you with GLOR #18. This time it’s personal! Ok, just kidding about that last part, but I’m not kidding about this: This issue of GLOR is dedicated to our dearly departed friends Robert Anton Wilson and Alison Meeder. In fact, we are planning a special RAW memorial issue in the near future, as soon as we’re finished ripping and massaging some choice cuts of hitherto unseen RAW prime filet.

Until next time, happy networking!

Abstract: Nick Herbert’s simple proof of Bell’s Non-locality Theorem is revisited. The proof is reduced to its bare bones, and demonstrates that quantum reality is non-local because (in a particular optical experiment) 1 + 1 = 3.

Musician, writer, painter, enigma, cultural icon - all of these and more apply to Billy Childish, an artist the world is waking up to. Over three years in the making, “Billy Childish Is Dead” is the first ever in-depth documentary to explore the extraordinary life of the man behind the myth.

Billy Childish is reputed to have recorded 100 LP’s during his 24-year career. As if that’s not enough to be getting on with, he’s also painted 2,000 odd paintings, written 2 novels & penned 30 plus volumes of poetry. Expelled from the prestigious St Martins School of Art early in his career, Childish has continued to paint, write and make music independently ever since.

Childish bands have long been championed by a succession of more established artists; Kurt Cobain liked Thee Mighty Caesars, & more recently The White Stripes - Jack White appeared on Top Of The Pop’s with Billy’s name scrawled on his forearm. Billy has also enjoyed an increasing public profile over the last twelve months with regular articles and interviews appearing in national newspapers and magazines. His stock as an artist is probably at its greatest.

Featuring rare archive footage from many of Billy’s musical projects, “Billy Childish Is Dead” offers a fascinating insight into Billy’s life and his views on many aspects of his childhood, career achievements and everyday existence - Billy granted the filmmakers access into his home and on tour with his current band The Buff Medways. Many of Billy’s friends, colleagues and admirers, including Shane McGowan, Holly Golightly, journalists Miranda Sawyer and Matthew Collings, Kids director Larry Clark and renowned author Bevis Hillier give their own unique insights into the man and the phenomenon. —theebillychildish.com

Watching Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady’s disturbing documentary about children indoctrinated into evangelical Christianity will make you weep. The tears might be of joy or terror, depending on how you feel about divisions between church and state — or child exploitation, for that matter. One thing is unequivocal, though. “Jesus Camp” should be required viewing for coastal urbanites perplexed by the heartland’s shift to the right. The film offers one answer to why the country’s Evangelical minority packs such a political wallop, and it’s frighteningly simple: They’re efficient — and ruthless. Pastor Becky Fischer, effervescent and focused, recruits for Kids on Fire, a Pentecostal summer camp in Devils Lake, N.D. There campers pray to a cardboard standup of George W. Bush, weep and speak in tongues, writhe on the floor clutching little fetus dolls and perform Cultural Revolution-style musical numbers in camouflage face paint. Think of it as boot camp for the future army of God. Fischer cheerfully admits to borrowing techniques used by other extreme religious factions (Islamic fundamentalism is a particular favorite) in her jihad against abortion, liberals and godless secularism. Counselors at Kids on Fire do not use war as a metaphor, but a sincere and formidable call to arms aimed at “taking America back for Christ.” Granted, the children in “Jesus Camp” aren’t randomly plucked off the playground and set on a redemptive crusade. Most are born into religious households where they are home-schooled to reject everything from evolution and science to Harry Potter and non-religious dancing (heavy metal and hip-hop are fine, as long as Christ is in the heart and the lyric sheet). Ewing and Grady (”The Boys of Baraka”) aren’t interested in the genesis of American evangelism, but in examining how the movement attracts young people at a time when church attendance is in a national slump, and the methods used by adults to sway the minds of children. They accomplish this by keeping larger cultural analysis to a minimum while concentrating on a microcosmic foursome: A trio of kids and Fischer, the adult who is either ruining or saving them (again, this is a matter of opinion). The three budding warriors for Christ are distinctive moppets, making their indoctrination into religious groupthink all the more unsettling. Mullet-haired Levi is a charismatic (in every sense) 12-year-old who emerges from his shell to deliver fire-and-brimstone sermons; Tory, 10, looks like a future cheerleader, but says she only wants use her body to exalt the Lord; and Rachael, who is articulate and earnest, and at 9 already a devoted street soldier accosting strangers to share the Word. Mike Papantonio, a Christian Air America talk-show host, acts as the directors’ onscreen mouthpiece by questioning evangelical tactics. A Midwesterner, he conveys a deeply personal despair at watching his country and religion co-opted. “Jesus Camp” tries to avoid overt political statements, striving instead for a disinterested empathy that informs without preaching. It succeeds, with a few hammer-to-head exceptions. The camera lingers too long on the hideous stretches of fast-food joints, religious signage and flag-bedecked suburbs that have become shorthand for “ignorant Midwest,” for example. More irksome still is an interview with Levi’s mother, a fundamentalist housewife whose quotes seem to have been edited into brief, fanatical sound bites. At heart, all documentaries aim to be important films. Few actually pull it off. Minor flaws and all, “Jesus Camp” is among the year’s most important films, if only because it forces us to learn about an America we seldom see and seldom want to see. It stares into the face of faith run amok, and for those willing to follow its gaze, it provides sad revelations. — Advisory: Frightening descriptions of abortions and emotional intensity and images of children writhing on the floor. SF Chronicle
